Information Letter

 Term1 February 2021

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I thought I would put our class information letter here as another way of accessing it if you need to look back on anything important.

It briefly outlines what happens in class and the important information about daily school life.

Our Learning

All our learning is chromebook based, however it is expected that the children can write, design, draw, and create with as many ‘tools’ as possible. Our concept for this year is Kotahitanga. We will be thinking about social action and how together we can be more effective for good. In our class we will be focusing on critical thinking, questioning and listening to each other, through collaborative learning.

Our Class Site

All of the learning in our class is accessed through our class site. Please take a look around and see the tasks that have been set for them, and the groups and subjects which are their focus for the week. This includes an outline of the daily timetable on the home page (ie. when swimming lessons or lunch times are) You can also access all the class blogs from here too.

Our Class Blog

We also have a class blog as well. This allows you to see what all the children in the class are learning and our current topics and experiences. This blog will be regularly updated with posts about what we have been up to.

Accessing the Notices

Much of our school communication is by email and notices are also emailed out to parents through a system called Hail. All school information can also be found on the school site which is linked to Hail. Facebook is a great way to keep track of what is happening in school too! There will be a new app that you can download on your phone as another option starting this year.

Some important things to remember at the beginning of the year.

  • Sunhats must be worn during Term One and Four.
  • The school stationery fee is $20 and this covers all subscriptions for online education sites, exercise books, equipment and stationery.
  • We are a ‘Water Only School’ and encourage healthy choices for lunch, e.g sandwiches, fruit, vegetables. Fruit should start in Week 2, on Monday 11th but it is helpful to add an extra snack or fruit to your child’s lunch box to eat at fruit time.
  • This year our school is beginning the government initiative of ‘Lunches in Schools’. Your child will need to bring their morning tea and anything else they would like to eat during the day to school.
  • We are trying to be as rubbish free as possible to enable our children to think about the effect that their choices have on the environment. All wrappers and rubbish that is brought to school needs to remain in your child’s lunchbox and taken home. Rubbish free lunchboxes tend to be healthier ones too.
  • Please bring dry togs, a towel, swimming cap and goggles everyday during Terms 1 and 4. Swimming is an important part of the curriculum and it is expected that just like other school subjects, all children participate. If your child is unable to swim due to illness, please write a quick note to explain this to the teacher. A shower is available for those children who have skin allergies.
  • If your child has their own chromebook, please ensure that it comes to school fully charged and it is brought everyday. Chargers need to stay at home so they do not get lost at school.
  • It is expected that your child is dressed in the Hornby Primary School uniform. Please leave any non uniform items and jewellery (studs, sleepers and cultural necklaces excluded) at home. Please also ensure that any undergarments are tucked in and cannot be seen.
  • The classroom is not open for children to enter until 8:30 am. We strongly encourage that children do not come to school before this time as there is no formal supervision available for them. If your child arrives at school earlier than this they wait at the picnic table area.
  • Formal home learning is not set in Room 9. We would however love you to encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes every day, practise their basic facts (+, - and x), read and comment on other’s blogs, and carry on with any learning they haven’t completed.
  • All cell phones brought to school by your children need to be dropped into the office upon arrival at school and collected when school has finished.

If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact me at school or pop into the class.

Kind regards,

Mrs Thorp :)

Welcome to 2021!

Kia ora parents, whanau and amazing children!

It's good to finally be starting the 2021 school year.  There has been a lot of change and new learning in 2020 and we are looking forward to the learning that we can accomplish this year.

I am especially looking forward to teaching and learning with Room 9! Many of you I have taught before, however, my name is a bit different to what it was last time!

I am now Mrs Thorp!

I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday and lots of time with your family and friends. I look forward to hearing all about it when I see you on Tuesday!
